Abstract

Abstract: Brazilian urban centers have traditionally embodied the nation's identity, serving as the backdrop for significant political, social, and cultural events. The downtown area of Rio de Janeiro, once the political and economic heart of Brazil, having been the country's capital for almost 200 years and an important financial center, remains vital due to its architectural value and economic role. However, the shift of business activities and residents to new areas has led to the area's depopulation and degradation. This paper, grounded in bibliographic research and Kevin Lynch's theories, mainly regarding legibility and imageability, explores the urgent need for an equitable and sustainable urban planning that truly addresses social and cultural demands to reverse the decline of the downtown area of Rio de Janeiro. It argues that by aligning urbanism with the population's needs, it is possible to revitalize the space, making it more inclusive and dynamic for all social classes.
