Abstract

The general objective of this scientific article is to verify whether conservation units are an effective instrument for environmental conservation. The work uses the inductive method and the technique of bibliographical research and is divided into three parts. The first aims to study the human and fundamental right to an ecologically balanced environment. The second part aims to analyze the general aspects of Law nº 9.985, of July 18, 2000, which created the National System of Nature Conservation Units. The third part aims to verify the role of these protected spaces in preserving the environment. It is concluded that conservation units help to regulate the cycle and rainfall regime, protect biological diversity and essential ecological processes and enable the exploitation of natural resources to be carried out in a sustainable manner, in addition to contributing to environmental education and formation of ecological awareness.
